February 23, 2010 – York’s JV took the ice with one goal. They took a strong step in that direction. Everyone felt “you never know; on any given day”, etc., but it turned out York was just as strong, prepared and focused. Deerfield didn’t know what they were up against. Just 30 seconds in, Tyler Winker set Alex Carson up for a “top shelfer”. On a power play a minute later, Thomas Gnadt checked his opponent reminding him this was York’s zone. He then crossed to the other side, passed it to Sean Marchese, better known as KZ who deaked the goalie and put goal 2 on the board. As Jon Bogdanowicz prepared for a change-up, he passed the puck to Brian Gleason. Gleason turned to send it deep for a line change, not realizing he was not only on net, but hearing the fans go crazy in shock, he turned to see it was in net too…from half-way across the ice! In the 2nd period, Deerfield changed things and put one up. With another power play opportunity, Gnadt wound-up on the blue line and his unassisted hard shot extended York’s lead by 3 again. Often Carson very patiently sets up his teammates. This time Winker and team captain John Peterson had their chance to return the favor. “Carson does an amazing job of skating through the opponents, passing the puck through their skates, dragging it around, beating them to the goal and seeing where the best opportunity lies. Whether or not it’s to his credit simply doesn’t seem to matter” said one of the fans. “These kids all get what makes a team successful” he added. Watching Sean Delaney’s persistence, the crowd couldn’t believe he didn’t get one of his shots in. Delaney owned that blue line. Let’s not sell the defensive side short. Between Delaney, Brad Johnson, Mike LeDonne, Paul Restivo and the rest of the defensive team, they stayed consistently solid, playing a strong physical game. John Harrell seemed to earn so many points, but finally one was represented in his assist to Gleason on his 2nd goal. It was hit so hard the ref cut the puck out of the net! Justin Schwarz was another guy who provided this incredible strength and amazingly didn’t yet have any “documented” credit yet in the game. Finally he was able to put it in ink with his perfect pass to Peterson who saw exactly where to place the goal. The goalie went down one way and Peterson sent it opposite corner, giving the goalie no possible save. As the fans listened to music between whistles, the entertainment of watching Paul Restivo playing some “drums” seemed to add fun to the excitement. With 5 minutes left in the 2nd, it was Harrell’s turn to have fun. While Gleason provided the distraction with the assist, Harrell shot on the open side for a goal. York was up by eight and had 2 players flirting with hat tricks. In the 3rd , Deerfield added one more by surprising Jeremy Fisher Haase with a shorty. Harrell was on fire & grabbed another chance, providing an assist to KZ sent it in top shelf. At this point, the poor goalie just kept taking shot after shot. To his credit, he made numerous saves, but was just a victim of York’s strength tonight. Now York had a hat trick of hat trick opportunities. Assisted by John Peterson, it would be KZ getting this one. With York changing positions to slow things down for Deerfield, defensemen enjoyed the chance to see the goal up close for a change. Offense visited the blue line a bit longer and the final goal was assisted by Jon Bogdanowicz and Brad Johnson, giving Schwarz a well-earned goal. Not mentioning the effort put up by Dakota Lamb, Adam Kosecki, Dalton Osmanski, Matt Bogdanowicz and Adam Hilgenkamp would be remiss. Each one of these boys played a critical role in this first state game win! |
